This month our students made pink ribbons to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness!

Breast Cancer Awareness!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. We have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and need your help!

The Pink Glove Dance started as a fun way for a hospital in Portland, Oregon to support their many patients with Breast Cancer. Soon after, many other hospitals, schools and businesses started making these videos in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Please enjoy watching!

PROJECT: DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, DIFFERENT CULTURES

CHRISTMAS CULTURE

Many people celebrate other holidays. In the USA there are four common holidays during December: Christmas, Swanzaa, Hanukka and Winter Solstice.

At Christmas, Santa Claus comes to put the presents inside our stockings and we leave cookies and some milk for him. 

We decorate the Christmas tree and sing Christmas Carols.

Kwanzaa is a celebration in the African American Culture. It´s a 7 day celebration with candles.

The Winter Solstice is on the 21st of December and celebrates the beauty of winter with winter sports: ski, snowboard, snowshoe and enjoy the winter months.

HANUKKAH is an eighth day Jewish holiday. It begins on the 25th day of Kislev, a month in the Hebrew calendar. This year it began on December 8th at sundown. Hanukkah means dedication in Hebrew. 

On a Menorah they light a candle each night after saying a blessing. 

Then they play a game with a dreidel.

They eat  latkes and jelly donuts.

THANKSGIVING AT SCHOOL

In the United States, people celebrate what they are thankful for on the fourth (4th) Thursday of November.

They have a big meal and spend the day with their families.


Before they eat they watch the Macy´s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Pilgrims were the first people that traveled from England on a ship called the Mayflower to the United States. Many of the Pilgrims died during the first winter. They were cold and did not have enough food. 
The Native American helped them to grow crops, so the Pilgrims invited three of the Native Americans their feast.
The Native American brought turkey, duck, fish, deer, berries, squash and cornbread.

Now some typical food for Thanksgiving:

Turkey

Mashed potatoes

Stuffing

Sweet potatoes

Cranberries 

Biscuits

Pumpkin pie

Apple pie

And here is the table ready to celebrate Thanksgiving.

MOVEMBER

November is the month of the moustaches. This event is called MOVEMBER. Let´s know more about it.



At school we´ve been working on our moustaches to be Mo´bros and Mo´sistas.

INTERVIEW WITH THE PAPER

Hello! My name is Megan Hirsh and I am the Auxiliar of Conversation this year at A Pedra. I am very excited to get to know all of your children and of course get to know Bueu and the surrounding areas! Thus far, I have enjoyed myself immensely! While I learn about Spain and specifically Galicia, I hope to teach your children about the United States. If you have questions, please feel free to ask, but remember to ask slowly. :)

The Faro de Vigo came to school and asked questions about the United States, my time in Spain, and my favorite Spanish foods. Here is the interview.

WELCOME MEGAN

This is a mural that the children put together to help welcome me to A Pedra. The wall has information about my country and my state, Oregon. Please come read it and learn about the United States!

Here we are making the O for Oregon. At American football games, we make an O with our hands to cheer on the Ducks, our football team!

THE OLYMPIC GAMES

The 2012 Olympics are being held in London. This is the third time they have been held there (1908 and 1948). At the summer Olympics, over 200 nations compete in over 25 sports.
